Theater Performance: Kormantse

As part of the Year of Remembrance for the History of Slavery, Untold is producing the performance *Kormantse* in co-production with Black Harmony. The performance begins in the Kormantse region in present-day Ghana. During the Transatlantic slave trade, people here resisted using, among other things, strategies and spiritual power drawn from this region. Today, within the Afro-Surinamese Winti tradition, we recognize the entity Kromanti.

Where does this entity come from, and how was it used during the resistance in the Caribbean? During Kormantse, you’ll also learn what we know about the Kromanti Winti.

The knowledge shared in the performance was compiled by Blaka Online, Otmar Watson, Orlando Ceder, and Desta Deekman. Nana Efua (better known as Marian Markelo) and Tata Dompo Julien Zaalman were also consulted to share their knowledge for the purposes of this performance. Kormantse is part of the Black Heritage Festival and showcases intangible cultural heritage in the form of African song and dance traditions and customs of the African-Surinamese diaspora.
