Lessons from the Colonial Past and Independence

As part of the 50th anniversary of Surinamese independence, the Untold Foundation and Pakhuis de Zwijger are developing a three-part live-stream series that explores in depth the significance and impact of Surinamese independence in relation to the city of Amsterdam.

In this first episode, we explore the complex relationship between colonialism and independence. How has colonial history shaped Suriname, and in what ways does that history continue to influence our institutions, relationships, and self-perceptions—both in Suriname and in the Netherlands? We reflect on the legacies of power, language, and identity, and ask: what does true independence look like, fifty years after Srefidensi?
